Once again the English Tea Room is serving the best afternoon tea in London and preserves its famous discreet and elegant setting, with a choice of teas including Brown's own blend, finely cut sandwiches, freshly baked scones, Brown's famous home-made jams and clotted cream, and a selection of cakes and delicate pastries, all combined to make a wonderful and exquisite afternoon tea experience. drink The Donovan Bar Extended to include the former Library Restaurant area, the Donovan Bar serves a wide selection of champagnes by the glass and distinctive cocktails. The hotel is just minutes from the elegant designer stores of Bond Street, the art galleries of Cork Street and St James's, the vibrant theatres of the West End and the calm, open spaces of Green Park, not to mention the City and Knightsbridge, which are both a short taxi ride away. Browns by hotel critic Harrison Brown. From the moment you walk through the door you are pampered and welcomed like a true luxury hotel. Upon check in your assistant walks you to your room and explains all the buttons, knobs, draws, switches and of course - the minibar, which is stocked full of luxury goodies. We booked an Executive King but were upgraded on arrival to a Deluxe King which gives a larger space with lounge area. The room had everything you would expect from a five star hotel, even a massive chrome shower head which is like standing under a thunderstorm - fantastic. While changing for dinner I was impressed by the choice of music available on the interactive tv/radio/communication system, but didn't have nearly enough time to study all its features. The bed was superbly luxurious and the turndown service with the slippers in position, a nice touch. The decor is contemporary luxury with creams and browns and although distinctly high quality, it just seemed a little like other contemporary five star hotels and not the grand hotel it once was. However, I like to judge a hotel on its overall experience and a walk through the hotel to the bar or restaurant soon reminds you of its roots, with dark wood panelled rooms and lots of references to bygone days. The late night Donovan Bar was also the perfect spot for a night cap after the delicious meal at the local Circus Restaurant in Soho. Location is great, especially if you like to shop Bond St. Overall a great experience. The staff were incredibly professional but also very human and the hotel is still full of charm. Even though a contemporary makeover may have removed some of the charm of the old rooms, I do very much love the new luxurious features this new style brings. Everything has a trade off. |
