A day in the Garden of England - much of our journey is over the old Pilgrims' Route used by the characters of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.
Canterbury This fascinating, medieval city has been centre of English Christianity since St. Augustine arrived in 597. The magnificent Cathedral, dating from the eleventh century is the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury and contains Royal tombs and glorious 13th century stained glass. It was also the scene of the gruesome murder of Thomas a Becket in 1170 and is a splendid example of medieval architecture at its finest. Dover Dover is the key to England's fascinating history and here we can view the famous White Cliffs and the Castle which, standing 400ft above sea level dates back to the 12th century. Leeds Castle Quite unusually, Leeds Castle sits on an island, surrounded by extensive grounds, was once described by Lord Conway as ‘the loveliest castle in the world’ . The Barbican, constructed during the reign of Edward I, is unique in that it is made up of three parts, each having its own entrance, drawbridge, gateway and portcullis, it contains a superb collection of medieval furnishings, tapestries and Impressionist art, as well as an aviary of rare birds, a vineyard and a maze. Exclusive Falconry and Vineyard Tour- See the spectacular falconry display choreographed to music with birds of prey including hawks, eagles and owls. Meet the vineyard manager and visit the beautiful vineyard. This tour finishes at approximately 7.30pm. |
